Heavy Steel Fabrication: From Plate Cutting to Finished Components
Heavy steel fabrication turns steel plate and prepared parts into custom components for industrial equipment. Depending on the drawing, the work can include material preparation, plate cutting, welding, CNC machining, inspection and assembly.
For an equipment manufacturer, the important question is not only which individual process is available. It is whether the full route matches the drawing, the critical dimensions and the required delivery condition.
Start With the Drawing and the Required Delivery Stage
Every project starts with the available technical information. A part drawing identifies the component shape and key dimensions. An assembly drawing explains how several components fit together. For a complex fabricated part, both are useful.
Buyers should also state the intended delivery stage. Some projects need cut plate parts only. Others need a component that has been machined, welded, inspected or assembled before it moves to the next production stage.

Plate Cutting and Material Preparation
Plate cutting is often the first production stage for a heavy component. The drawing, material specification, thickness, part geometry and subsequent processes all affect the cutting review.
VHOFAB provides flame, plasma and laser cutting for custom steel parts. Its public capability information states cutting support for steel plate up to 500 mm thick and cutting sizes up to 3,500 × 15,000 mm. The right process still depends on the specific project rather than a single general rule.
When welding or machining follows, the cutting stage should be considered together with the next operation. A part that will receive final machining may need a different blank condition from a part that will be supplied as a cut component.
Welding and CNC Machining as Connected Stages
Welding joins prepared steel parts into frames, bases, structures and other fabricated components. The drawing package should show the relationship between the parts, the required joint areas and any critical interfaces.
Many fabricated components also require machining after welding. CNC milling, boring, turning, drilling and surface machining can be used for features such as mounting faces, holes, bores and connection points. In these cases, the cutting, fitting, welding and machining sequence should be planned as one route.
This is especially relevant for machine frames, equipment bases and large custom components. VHOFAB’s public information describes CNC boring and machining for large components, along with welding and fabrication for heavy steel parts.
Inspection, Assembly and Delivery Condition
Inspection requirements should be identified before production begins. Buyers can provide the critical dimensions, machined features, visual requirements and any project-specific inspection points that apply to the finished part.
Assembly is available when multiple cut, machined and welded components need to be supplied at a more complete stage. The required delivery condition may range from individual parts to a fabricated assembly ready for the customer’s next production step.

Information to Include in a Fabrication RFQ
An efficient review begins with clear project information:
- PDF, DWG, DXF or STEP drawings
- Material grade or material specification
- Plate thickness and component dimensions
- Required quantity
- Critical dimensions and tolerances
- Welding and machining requirements
- Surface treatment, inspection and packing requirements
- Assembly drawing or bill of materials when several parts are involved
